Dropbox Space Race is on!
I mentioned the Dropbox Space Race earlier this month, but the race is still ongoing and now they have added conference affiliation for additional incentive!
If you aren't familiar with Dropbox, it is a cloud-based storage service that gives 3 GBs of space for free. You can earn additional space for free by completing your profile and getting friends to sign-up for the service.
Dropbox allows all file type and it allows you to share files with other users. Accessible via web or smartphone/tablet, you can get to your files from anywhere. Also, Dropbox offers instant photo uploads from your smartphone - a great way to backup your pictures and videos from your phone or iPod.
Via the Space Race promotion, they are offering huge amounts of space - up to 25 GBs for schools with large numbers of Dropbox users. So far, Coker College has unlocked 3 additional GBs of space with 4 users. We are currently ranked sixth in Conference Carolinas! I think we can do better than that!
If you are already a Dropbox user, you can still take advantage of the additional space by adding your Coker e-mail to your account.
For more details, check out the Dropbox blog: https://blog.dropbox.com/2012/10/now-announcing-the-great-dropbox-space-race/

Good luck!

Mario, the low sodium black olives, is lonely. Will you help him out?
Hello. My name is Mario. I am a can of low sodium black olives. And I am lonely. I have been sitting at the bottom of this Harvest Hope Food Bank donation box, all by myself, all week. Although I am low sodium, I wouldn't mind if some high(er) sodium foods came to join me in this box. I'm not even a most needed item, as designated by the good folks at Harvest Hope: they would like to see peanut butter, soups, beans, baby formula, and other nutritionally dense foods. I personally WOULD LOVE to chat with a jar of peanut butter. It really is lonely down here.
The good folks at the library will be giving credit for overdue fines for each canned good you donate. Check the circulation desk for more information.
Please, don't let me be lonely. Thank you.

Fun Friday: (Kevin) Bacon Numbers via Google
Have you ever played the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game? The object is to tie another actress/actor to Kevin Bacon in fewer than six "degrees" or steps. For instance, Marlon Brando is two degrees from Kevin Bacon: Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall appeared together in The Godfather, and Robert Duvall and Kevin Bacon were both in appeared in Jayne Mansfield's Car.
Well, Google takes the fun out of it. Enter an actress/actor's name in Google with "Bacon Number" after the name, and the search behemoth will do all of the work for you. Give it a try! And put your most interesting examples in the comments.
Thanks to the Vancouver (B.C.) Sun for article: Google Creates Bacon Number feature

Classics in Audiobooks...on Youtube?
What if you could listen to classics - for literature classes, for intellectual bragging rights, or whatever - for free, wherever you have an internet connection?
You can.
I stumbled across CC Prose Audiobooks on Youtube, and I was pleasantly surprised at the library and quality of the collection. All of the books are in the public domain, so there isn't a copyright issue by reading these books online. They provide the text via closed caption, so you can read along on your computer or smartphone.
Here is Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence:

Encyclopedia Britannica stops the presses
After 244 years, the venerable Encyclopedia Britannica will stop publication of its printed edition soon. As many of you that have had me (or other librarians) for COM 101 classes know, the minute an encyclopedia is printed (and actually, during the final editing process) it is out of date. Sales of the printed Encyclopedia Britannica have been falling since the 1990s, with information seekers heading to Google and Wikipedia.
The good news is that we have a better product - the online edition of Britannica, which has already been updated to reflect the deaths of Whitney Houston, the Monkees' Davy Jones and other (more) important timely information.
If you are feeling nostalgic, you can look at our copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica from 1959, donated by a Coker alumna. The volumes are located on the landing between the first and second floors.
Check out the printed edition of Encyclopedia Britannica's obituary from the New York Times.

Book Talk - Unbroken
Professor Todd Rix will be discussing Laura Hillenbrand' s latest book, Unbroken. Published in November 2010 to rave reviews, this book will stay with you for a long time. Join us on March 22 at 11am in LITC217. This is a book you will want to read and talk about.
Caroline Leavitte from People said of the book,"Any one of the threads in Hillenbrand's monumental new book could be a page-turner all its own. There's the staggering story of Olympic runner and Air Force bombardier Louis Zamperini, terrifyingly stranded in 1943 on a life raft for 47 days, battling sharks, a typhoon and enemy gunfire. Then there's the story of his two years in a brutal Japanese POW camp run by the sadistic Mutsuhiro Watanabe, who beats, starves and humiliates the prisoners beyond endurance. And finally there's the aftermath, when the haunted, broken Zamperini tries to make sense of his life after the war. Zamperini's story, which Hillenbrand first came across in the sports pages while researching her previous book Seabiscuit, is as mesmerizing as it is gut-wrenching. And Hillenbrand's writing is so ferociously cinematic, the events she describes so incredible, you don't dare take your eyes off the page. Though the book centers on Zamperini, we meet other WWII heroes as well: POWs who risked their lives and then battled post-traumatic shock. Unbroken is a devastating story of the unforgivable, and of one extraordinary man who forgave."
